The Color Purple
--Alice Walker
The story of the two important characters Celie and Nettie, the African-American sisters and their struggle of being born in uneducated and abusive family and then getting married and suffering more abuse than earlier. Its the belief of Celia that GOD reads her letters. So the narrative of the book is in the form of her letters to GOD. The sisters after being married do not know about each others whereabouts and consider the other being no more. But later on come to know about each other only to hope that one day their struggle will end and they'll meet each other and live together. Now they write to each other and they write to GOD.
The characters of the story Celie, Nettie, Mister, Harpo, Sophia, Shug Avery all represent different personalities of resilience, hope, oppressiveness, brutality, courageous, fierce all knit well by Alice Walker.
The journey of Celie from oppression to freedom and with the touch of African accent is worth reading.
